Drug Paraphernalia Associated with Marijuana

Drug Paraphernalia Associated with Marijuana

Of all the drugs of abuse, marijuana may be the most difficult to conceal because of the powerful smell of the smoke. Marijuana is most often smoked, but there are other ways to consume it.

Traditional Methods of Using Marijuana

Certain paraphernalia is typically used to smoke marijuana. Traditionally the most common method of smoking marijuana is to roll it in a cigarette paper producing the classic “joint” or “reefer.” Finding cigarette papers may be an indication of marijuana use, but it does not constitute proof. The person may simply roll his or her own tobacco cigarettes.

With the rise in popularity of marijuana in the 1960s and 1970s, use of pipes to smoke marijuana became more common. Marijuana can be smoked in a standard wooden pipe, ceramic pipe (such as a Meerschaum) or corncob tobacco pipe, but it is much more commonly smoked out of a special pipe made expressly for marijuana. Early marijuana pipes were often made from metal and sometimes even literally from pieces of plumbing pipe screwed together.

In the 1990s, marijuana smokers became increasingly aware of the hazards of inhaling the vapors from heated metal along with their marijuana smoke. Pipes made from natural materials, such as ceramic pottery, wood or glass, became much more popular than metal pipes. Glass pipes are probably the most popular and are sold in many places, even in convenience stores in some areas of the country. Glass pipes are hand blown, and each one is unique. Most are simple and relatively inexpensive, but some are elaborate works of art in their own right and may cost upwards of 50 to 100 dollars. Homemade pipes can be made from a variety of common materials, such as a cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels fitted with a tinfoil bowl. Water pipes, known as bongs or bubblers, are also popular. In a water pipe, the smoke passes through water before being inhaled.

Alternative Methods of Using Marijuana

Marijuana users have experimented with many alternative methods of using the drug. Some people drill a hole in an apple, fill one end of the hole with marijuana, light it and inhale the smoke from the other end. People sometimes inhale marijuana smoke through a gas mask or heat it on the stove or a hot piece of metal and trap the smoke in a jar.

Cooking marijuana in food has been popular for years and allows people to consume the drug without the telltale smoke. This method is effective because the heat of cooking activates THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Marijuana can be baked into practically anything.

A method of using marijuana that has gained favor very recently is known as “vaporizing.” A vaporizer is a device made especially for the purpose of marijuana use and consists of a length of surgical tubing attached to a piece of glass, an electric heating element and a rheostat to control the level of heat. The marijuana is placed in the glass, which then fits over the heating element. The idea is to heat the marijuana sufficiently to activate the THC, but not enough to cause it to smoke. This method reduces the amount of toxins that are released when marijuana is smoked.
